Air Cargo in Context of Nepal as a landlocked country

The key difference in between air cargo and other cargo is that it is done by plane and is one of the most important part of international logistics networks.  Air cargo is mostly used for time-sensitive goods over large distances. Air cargo is usually transported using dedicated cargo aircraft or passenger aircraft depending on many factors. Is has more scope than other cargo method in landlocked countries like Nepal.

But in terms of international shipment although air cargo only transport around .5 percent of international cargo it is said that it consists of 30 percent of total value of international shipment. 

It is obvious that Planes are used as the carrier of these air cargo. Air Freighters make up to around sixty percentage of total air cargo rest is done by passenger planes. Countries like nepal does not have high volume of cargo shipment to operate for air freight operator so majority of cargo is transported by passenger plane but there are some exceptions. In recent years nepal too is trading its goods to far away countries like USA and european countries air freighters have started showing in nepalese skies. 

If passenger aircraft is used, the cargo can be placed in the hold or transported by an on-board courier (OBC). The cargo hold of a plane is usually in the “belly” of the plane, underneath the passengers. An on-board courier is someone who is flying as a passenger and takes the cargo as a carry-on. As an expensive service, this is typically used for very urgent or valuable small goods.

For air freighters, the cargo can be loaded into the main deck in addition to the belly. These plane has fewer crew members as they don’t need to look after goods once they are loaded. Most of the time companies use converted old passenger plane as freighter as older plane can cheaper to buy, but nowadays companies are investing into newer planes as they are much more cost effective than their older counterpart.
